The Sir Michael Howard Prize

The Sir Michael Howard Prize

The Sir Michael Howard Prize launches in September 2017 and will be awarded to the author of the best article in any one volume of the British Journal for Military History (BJMH). The Prize comes with a cash award of £1000 to be paid in November 2018.

Published authors will automatically be eligible for winning the prize.

Judging Panel

Three panellists determine the winner of the prize. Two of these panellists represent institutions where Professor Howard played a leading part: King’s College London and Oxford University. The final panellist is a member of, and has been selected by, the Editorial Advisory Board of the BJMH.

Governance

The method by which the panellists agree on deciding how to award the prize is left to the discretion of the panel. If no agreement can be reached, however, then the prize will not be awarded. If the judges decide that no prize can be awarded in any one volume then the prize will not be awarded.

The Prize

The Sir Michael Howard Prize comes with a cash award of £1000 and has been generously sponsored by the British Commission for Military History.

About the Journal

The BJMH is an Open Access, peer-reviewed journal that has been in operation since 21 October 2014. Now starting our fourth volume and with a readership of nearly 6000 people, the editorial team is keen to continue the work of promoting military history to an audience beyond academia.

As part of these plans the editorial team has approached and received the agreement from Sir Michael Howard for the BJMH to own and host a Sir Michael Howard Prize. Our goal is to make this prize one of the most coveted prizes for those studying military history and the history of war.

Questions?

The Sir Michael Howard Prize is managed and overseen by Dr Catherine Baker, Editor, BJMH. Any enquiries about the prize should in the first instance be directed to her at Catherine.Baker@hull.ac.uk.
